Ọkọwaokwu Igbo Ụmụaka : Igbo Dictionary for Children is the first fully illustrated modern Igbo dictionary. In recent years we have witnessed a surge of interest in dictionary research in 2nd language contexts. Susan Knight’s research in 1994 (Dept of Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures, Central Michigan University), demonstrates that those who used a dictionary as well as guessed through context not only learned more words immediately after reading but also remembered more after two weeks.

This dictionary is perfect for children aged 6 and above as they can easily understand the words and illustrations. It is designed for children learning on their own, with adults, or in a group. This dictionary is very popular with adults who are learning Igbo too!
  • Easy to use – No more struggling to teach your child Igbo language.
  • Helps you create a special bond with your child when using the dictionary together.
  • Takes the guesswork out of so many Igbo words.
  • Perfect for children at home, children at school or at Igbo learning groups.
  • Designed for modern day Igbo language learning.
This video companion to the Igbo dictionary takes it a step further by showing you how the words and sentences are pronounced with clear audio.
This is especially important because Igbo is a tonal language and the words need to be pronounced the right way for it to be understood. An added feature to the video companion is that each example sentence is colour coded so that you can match up and understand the meanings of the other words in the example sentence.
The videos are organised by alphabets and are searchable. You can't afford not to have this as a reference and a handy resource.

When I couldn’t find appropriate Igbo learning materials for my children, I started researching the best methods for second language learning.

I discovered that stories are a very powerful tool in language learning. Using my digital media, education, and Igbo language skills, I have been developing useful learning materials for Igbo as a second language.

I use stories in almost every learning material I create – from dictionaries, story books, work books to audio and video lessons. These range from one-sentence stories, to historical stories, dialogues, monologues, traditional proverbs, folktales, biblical, mythical, contemporary and current news stories.

Using feedback from my children, students and comments on social media, I have refined my work over time to make it a balance between formal and informal Igbo, so that the learner can become fluent in speaking, reading, writing and listening in Igbo language. The main version Igbo I use is Igbo Izugbe ( Formal written Igbo), which is the version used in education and media.

Although the online Igbo courses are primarily for personal use, I am also creating separate materials for teachers to use in taught classes. These materials will also come in handy for parents who want to teach their children.
